How it's calculated

Order in cubic yards once you pass about 12 bags — one yard replaces roughly 13.5 standard bags and costs far less delivered in bulk.
Spreading too thin. Mulch settles, so 2–3 inches is the working depth for beds; anything under 2 inches won't hold moisture or block weeds.

- How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?
- A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so it equals about 13.5 standard 2 cubic foot bags. Once your job needs more than roughly 12 bags, bulk mulch is usually cheaper.
- How deep should mulch be?
- 2 to 3 inches is standard for garden beds. Less than 2 inches won't suppress weeds or hold moisture; more than 4 inches can suffocate roots.
- How much does a cubic yard of mulch cover?
- At 3 inches deep, one cubic yard covers about 108 square feet. At 2 inches it covers about 162 square feet.
- Should I add extra for waste?
- Yes. A 10% waste factor covers settling, uneven ground, and spillage. Bump it to 15% for very irregular or sloped beds.
